The Organist [Hollandse Meesters]

about

In the spring of 1982 Dutch Masters Harold Schellinx & Ronald Heiloo worked on 'Commuters', a series of short anti-pop songs set for no more than a single voice and an acoustic piano, that later that year they recorded with singer Dagmar Krause. The composing was done in a long series of afternoon and evening sessions in the studio of youth centre Oktopus on the Amsterdam Keizersgracht, known for its hosting (in 1980 and 1981) of the legendary series of ULTRA concerts. This short recording of 'The Organist', taken from a cassette with recordings of these sessions, gives a surprising insight in the devious processes that eventually led to the 'Commuters' album. Harold here does the lead vocal, Ronald plays the piano and sings along. [{ Link to the version of the song on the Commuters album: soundblog.bandcamp.com/track/the-organist }]

lyrics

He reviews the nails of his
left hand. His jaw moves.
He hums, prolonging in solemn
echo the closes of the bars.
A woman is kneeling absorbed
in some supplication. With
evident amusement he rubs his
nose. To rest safely in the
arms of Kingdom Come is only
a paradox in his spare time.
He walks out of the chapel,
gently closing the door
behind him.
Outside evening falls
dry and rasping
the village rumbles
pale but composed
the organist smiles.
